tipping in Vietnam

If you are travelling to Vietnam, you must be familiar with the tipping etiquette there. Generally, tipping is not expected in Vietnam, but is very much appreciated. Many Vietnam workers do not earn much money and always appreciate the extra money to be made in tips.

The official currency in Vietnam is the Vietnam dong (d). However, United States dollars are also accepted in most places. If you are travelling to Vietnam, make sure you exchange your money to their currency so you will have plenty of spending money. Also, it is important to note that at most tourist attractions, people buy items through bargaining. When bargaining, be polite and never argue. Always try to get the best price for what you want, but if you can’t, don’t get upset.

tipping etiquette for hotels in Vietnam

In Vietnam Tip 1-2 dollars per day

Tipping at hotels in Vietnam will all depend on the quality of service. If you receive good service, you should leave the housekeepers around 1-2 dollars per day. If a bellman carries your bag, tip him 1 dollar per bag. Before you leave, if you wanted, you could also leave a few dollars to the individual at the desk. However, if you did not receive good service, don’t feel as though you need to tip at all.

tipping in restaurants in Vietnam

In Vietnam Tip 5-10% to your waiter

In most restaurants in Vietnam, a 5-10% service charge is added to the bill. Unfortunately, this money does not always end up in the restaurant staff’s hands. You could tip around 5-10% of the bill if the service charge is not added. If the service charge is added, you could always leave some change for your waiter or waitress. If you are in a bar, you should probably tip your bartender. Bartenders are generally paid very little and rely on their tips. A good way to do this is to round up your bill to the nearest dollar or leave a few dollars for him or her.

In Vietnam Tip 15-20% at a Spa

Tipping is not usually expected in a higher end five star resort spa because the price of the services includes any gratuity. Of course, if you are impressed with your services, feel free to tip anyway. If you go to a lower end spa, the prices for services will be much lower and the gratuity will probably not be included. If you are happy with the services, you could tip between 15-20% of the cost of the spa services.

In Vietnam Tip 0-15% to your hair stylist

Tipping your hairdresser is up to you. If you are happy with your haircut and style, then you should tip around 10-15% of the bill.
